Have old desktop PC. was running OK, then got new PC. Now the old PC will not boot up - the fan sputters like you are flipping its power off and on continuously. what could be the issue?

...hmmm...you don't need to be an expert to check up all capacitors over your old motherboard. If you find any swollen (top side) try to replace it in service.

The most common issue with old computers is bad contacts, especially with the RAM modules. If the PC stopped booting when you upgraded the RAM, it might be imcompatible with the motherboard, try putting the 1GB stick back. If that is not the case, try cleanning the contacts of the RAM module and reinstalling it. If you never done this before, you may want to ask someone experienced to do it because if you do not fit the module correctly, you can damage the motherboard and the RAM. In case you do this and the computer still won't work, it might be another faulty component. The procedure normally is to test other components, to find the problem. It can also be a problem with the PSU.
