HDR-HC1 Sony camcorder- reinsert the cassette error message
My camcorder just started displaying this message- the cassette assembly seems slower to open than it used to be- and when it does open, and I close it- I get the error message "reinsert the cassette". I have tried other tapes, and tried a reset as well as removing the battery for a period of time- message persists. I was able to get it to function during our recent vacation after numerous reinsertions of cassette tape- but now it is back to being very problematic.
Appreciate any help!

Bill,
The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.
That little bump on the bottom did it, I though we were in trouble cause this is the only camera we have that will play all of the DV tapes we have. Is there any other unit out there that will play and or record to DVD, that a person can use if my camera goes down for good.
These error code means that there is a problem with the take up reel. The tape up reel is responsible for "taking up the tape slack" as the tape is running. Try resetting the camcorder. This is done by removing the battery or ac power, wait 10 seconds, reapply the battery or ac power and try again. however..seems this usually happens when the tape has run out of time whilst recording, you have changed the tape....and your re-inserting the tape again for transfer trying to rewind it correct?.....either way, pull the battery off, have the power chord ready plugged in as the only power source, close the tape door...and just as it loads pull the power chord out as you just hear it try to wind up....then wait a few seconds, (your on switch is in VTR or VCR mode......quickly put the power chord back into the camera and repeatedly overide the commands by hitting the << REW button or FFW>> the camera should have bypassed the error alert and start winding the tape....just let it wind the tape for about 20 seconds...hit stop....pless PLAY > you should have normal function again. and go to where you wanted the tape to be.
This works on my Sony Handycam HDR HC7 for error C31:23 "reinsert the cassette". I have no idea why but it works every time for me:
-Switch off camera and insert casssette
-switch on
-press reset for 3 secs (see manual for location)
-cancel clock set
-press P-MENU
-press menu
-scroll to time/language
-press ok
-scroll to clock set
-press ok
-set clock
-press ok and it should be working
Good luck
