This is most likely a problem with the flame sensor. This is the part that sits in the flame and acts as a rectifier. It tells the gas v alve okay to stay on because we have flame otherwise it would just keep spewing gas out whether it was lite or not. I would locate the flame sensor and take it out and clean it with some lite grit sand paper or emery and put it back in and it should work normally.
You can try a new thermocouple but if the pilot is lite or staying lite then it is not the thermocuple. The way your question is worded it sounds like the burner comes on for 3 or 4 minutes and then it shuts off this would be the flame sensor not the thermocouple but if the pilot is coming on for 3 or minutes and then shutting off then the thermocuple is bad or you could try cleaning it.You can try a new thermocouple but if the pilot is lite or staying lite then it is not the thermocuple. The flame sensor should be near the main burner. The thermocouple should be near the pilot light. I have tried to find a diagram online have not found one yet but will keep looking. The flame sensor should be near the main burner. The thermocouple should be near the pilot light. All you probably need to do is blow the dust out the safety pilot.
I have repair photos and a great demo on how those pilot work: HERE

Other than those I posted earlier all those systems work on the same principle.
