Hello i have a 84 datsun pickup. it drove good on the day i bought it but after i got home the power steering reservoir was busted. I tryed driving it after that and my truck started smoking and after i got up to 25 mph it started to die out and when i down shifted and gave it gas it fully died. if i would drive it just at 25 it will keep going but anything over it will stall out. i need this fixed asap. please anyone with any solutions. thank you
I would start with a cylinder compression test to find out the engine's internal mechanical condition. If compression is good on all four cylinders, it should be good to put whatever new parts it needs to run right. All new parts won't help if you have an internal problem (like a bad head gasket, or valve train problem). That will have to be fixed first. Don't throw money on new parts until you know you have a good engine. Is this a carbureted engine? If it is, you may need the carb rebuilt.
Just fyi, gale, if you go looking for parts for this truck, everything on it would go by Nissan, model 720 pickup. Datsun officially became Nissan in 1981. I hope yoour engine turns out good. If it is, there are cheap carburetors (used, but mostly rebuilt) on ebay-a lot cheaper than new at $300-$400. I just found one recently for my '87 Sentra sedan (Nissan), don't think I'll need it, though. So carbs for your truck are out there, just have to search around-that's an option to having your carburetor rebuilt. The 720 was a pretty solid, nice little truck-good luck.Just fyi, gale, if you go looking for parts for this truck, everything on it would go by Nissan, model 720 pickup.
