Help it's cold here in Ohio
I have a cozy room heater made in 1991, 60,000 BTU. My problem is that this (pic) wire broke off the valve unit. I am wanting to know if this is fixable with out buying a new valve. The wire hooked to the valve unit is solid but when it broke off I smelled gas so I shut the gas off. Would gas escape from this? Also what is this wire and metal pen looking thing attached at the end, it's purpose? Can I tape over it and try lighting the stove?
Thank you for any help, Debra

Hi there,
The item you broke off is the sensing capilary tube-it may be filled with mercury or a substitute material that expands when heated...it is NOT tied to your gas fuel......it's purpose is to sense temperature and signal to the internal thermostat to open or close....it will not operate in this condition.. You need a new gas control valve.
The gas gladiator
The "wire" you broke is probably the tube for the pilot assembly. It supplies gas to the pilot which in turn fires the burners thru a gas valve. The other option is you broke the thermocouple which causes the gas valve to open (its a safety feature incorporated to keep gas explosions from happening). You will need to replace the broken part before using this unit--period. It is not worth the danger involved trying to bypass these safety measures. BE SAFE!!!
