Try changing the resolution...different setting are different "aspect ratio". Square 4:3 vs rect as angle 16:9..so some may not "fill or fit" your screen...
Windows likely doesn't recognize the video card that is in the laptop. Go to the manufacture's website and see if the offer a video driver for the version of Windows you are installing for your laptop model. Likely Windows is using a generic video driver that is causing the black bars, and likely a low resolution display. You could also open the control panel and click on display drivers, and use the option to have Windows search for the best driver. That could work, but not as likely.

Try hooking it up to a external monitor to see if the internal monitor is working property.
