Hi. I am installing a nest learning thermostat. My old thermostat has 5 wires connected to it. Instructions i have show only 4. I have a extra wire RED and do not know what to do with it......????
Leave it in the wall or attache to nest base on some other connector not marked R ? My heating and cooling system is simple. One new gaz furnace(2yrs old) and an electric cooling unit (12yrs plus). It is a heat pump unit that was only installed and used as a cooling ac unit. I have no other appliances (humidifier) attached. Thanks

It would help to take note of original wiring. Wire color and terminal designation.
Typical red-r, yellow-y, white-w, blue-b or o, green-g where r is power, y is cooling, etc.etc.
More info is needed for better help.
Where were the wires landed before? what wire do you have going to R
