I have never done any Bentley work. However from what you are saying I would suggest locating the junction box under the hood. This is a relay and fuse box. Pop the lid and on the under side is the legend for the panel layout. Look for the main fuse as this fuse will stop everything. I also suggest you look for any relays marked for the "ignition." Sounds like one of the relays for the ignition of that main fuse are bad. For about any car I would start with this after replacing the battery.
There is always the possibility of this being the starter just went out too but this can be tested before replacing but check the panel box first.
If you have the owners manual you can look up the exact location of them as well.
