Hi i just talked to a guy about my m-6846 series notebook not responding to card reader prompts. I downloaded the new driver as suggested by gateway...but now it tells me to insert a disc when there is one in there, and also i can't even right click to view properties etc. he suggested refomatting the whole thing with system restore. i am sure there is a more tolerable solution and less invasive avenue. iT JUST STARTED DOING THIS YESTERDAY...PLEASE HELP 64 BIT OS VISTA GATEWAY T4A83B1009918

I do not think or feel its a software related issue here is why.
The card reader is on a USB interface its not ran on software alone. A card reader when it does not work needs to be nothing more then replaced. I have a imac what had happened to my imac was and is what is happening to your machine. The card reader would not see or mount the card or it was not responsive. This is nothing more then the card reader going bad on you. Take it for what its worth, I been in this industry for 15 years or more I know my stuff, The people have voted me in here at fixya to be one of fixyas best techs (not bragging) You can format it,recover it,but it still not going to make any difference. If a card reader is acting funny its hardware!!!
you need to fire that tech and move on period. You need to investigate "is my machine under warranty?" you need to investigate if its not under warranty how much will the part cost. Beating this around the bush with drivers, re formats,recovers just going to throw you into more tech support Wo's and possible more money out of your pocket. Do me a favor please let this be your last solution on here and take it in to a local tech have him test it if he is telling you to reformat ignore him and take it direct to gateway. My diagnosis today is hardware failure. Do not shoot the messenger but your going to thank me for saving you big bucks.

You cna follow some trobleshooting guides from this link in making your card reader to work again, and also by the way you can first try uninstalling the Integrated Smart Card Reader from device manager and then once done restart the computer to reinstall it back and check if its working now.
