hibernate - sometimes
I've had my vista home premium PC for one yr + and its sometimes won't awaken from sleep/hibernate ( usually overnite ) .Sometimes it does, other times NO and I have to pwr down and remove pwr plug, wait one minute. It reboots, usually says windows shut down unexpectedly. I'm up to date with video & windows updates including SP1. No change to intermittent waking problem.checked with HP support. de;leted screensaver. no change Looked at event viewer, but not sure what I'm looking at. Is there a software conflict? How can I diagnose this. Vista should fix this ??? Should I buy a registry/error tool, like REcure. HELP

To the original poster: There's a patch from HP related to this. Visit hp.com, and review the support download and drivers.
Below is the solution if you can't find the patch from HP, or if you're one of the countless people having this problem on another brand computer (usually an Acer or Toshiba with Vista and AMD chips).
The problem is actually related to the screen-saver, not to sleep/suspend/hibernate, although since they tend to happen in similar time frames and similar ways, it's hard to pinpoint. To resolve...
1. Set your computer power-scheme to "max performance" or "high performance".
1a. Alternatively, go to Power Settings, then click on Change Plan Settings, then click on Change Advanced Power Settings, Scroll down to Processor Power Management, and set Minimum Processor State to 100 percent for both plugged in and battery.
(For 1 and 1a, I realize some people don't like that the "solution" is actually a "work-around", but at this point in time, nobody from either Microsoft or AMD has fully "fixed" the problem, so to use your computer, you're stuck with a lowly "avoid the problem" workaround.)
2. You have AMD chips in your computer, so chances are, you have ATI powered video. Go to Catalyst Control Center, and turn off "PowerPlay".
3. Also for your power settings, set your "Turn off monitor" setting to a suitable value, 5 to 20 minutes (whatever your like), AND TURN OFF THE SCREENSAVER ENTIRELY. The "turn off monitor" will do basically the same things that the screen saver would do, and avoids the problem that Vista/AMD computers sometimes have.
If you're brave, you can skep step 3, but I recommend doing all 3 of the steps.
