High Fuel Consumption FORD Ecosport 1.5 Ambient
I drive the 1.5 Ecosport Ambient Petrol version - I bought it new - took delivery in January 2016 from Ford in Pietermaritzburg - it now has 6973 km's on the clock as at 2 July 2016 - I find that it is extremely heavy on fuel - with a combined cycle from a full tank of fuel (52 litres) it gets between 435 to 437.5 km's per tank. I've tested this on a number of occasions - and this poor performance can most certainly not be attributed to hard driving as I live in a low traffic zone and with the little power coming from the engine it does not allow for heavy driving - so average speed is between 50 - 110 on the combined cycle, I took the car back to FORD and was told it might need to be re calibrated, but why should this be necessary on a brand new car. So far this has been the most disappointing performing vehicle I've every owned! Is this normal?

Recalibration is sometimes caused by manufacturers using previous years ecm / pcm software. the optimum values sometimes differ if upgraded sensors are being used. although sensor values should not change much, sometimes cumulative differences or even differences in one sensor vs computer (ecm/pcm) software can lead to less than optimum performance or fuel economy.
conversely, software updates in the ecm/pcm can cause the same performance issues but are less likely.
