There may be a change over leaver in the hood which lets you select between recirculate and vent. Look for that first.

Thanks, I may add some charcoal filters.

Check with a kitchen supplies center, there may be something more effective and more suitable for your purpose than the basic old charcoal filter. Good Luck!
