Hot water heater flow problems
I recently replaced a 25+ year old 40 gal electric water heater with a 50 gallon electric Whirlpool water heater. The problem I am experiencing is that I cannot get the same flow output as with the water heater that was previously installed. The flow of hot water is intermittent.
I did notice that down inside of the water heater outlet line (3/4'' NPT) there is a heat trap which looks like a plastic insert with pie wedges cut into it. Could this be causing my iratic flow problems? If so, can I remove it, since my water lines feeding and leaving the water heater are insulated for at least 5 feet?

Thanks in advance for your help.
