The backrest is attached to a bracket, and the barcket is attached to the chair by sliding the steel bracket into a channel guide located on the underside of the seat bottom. It's designed to slide in and out to allow it to be adjusted to fit your body's shape. The backrest itself is also adjustable up and down. When you have positioned the backrest both vertically and horizontally the way you like it, you tighten a large knob to hold the position If you are having troble sliding the bracket into the seatback or seat channel, try loosening the knob so that the thread is almost completely backed out. (If its screwed in slightly, ot will stick up and prevent the bracket from being inserted into the guide).
