Like most point&shoot cameras, the JX520 doesn't give you much direct control over the camera. You're just supposed to point and shoot, without worrying about trivial things like aperture and shutter speed.
You can get some indirect control over the aperture by selecting an appropriate scene mode. The Portrait and Sport modes, will open up the aperture as much as it can, while the Landscape mode will tend to close it down.
