How do I disconnect ac on a 91 charade.?
My g100 1991 charade the AC doesn't work so I would like to disconnect it. I have no interest in repairing or replacing unit, I would just like to disconnect for potentially better fuel economy and less engine wear. Thank you for responding. I apologise I should state that the ac control unit is not responding and have issues with the compressor. When it's turned on, the AC causes the car to shake rather violently. Hence why I would like to disconnect or remove if engine performance improves.

Fuel economy wont change if you dont run ac but you can go to auto parts store and get a belt for a car without AC
Simply unplug the electronic wire that goes to the compressor the compressor will no longer work I agree with both answers above you can take the compressor off or just simply remove the compressor belt no need to if you just simply unplug it
If your ac doesn’t work it won’t decrease your fuel economy unless you are running the ac so without properly recovering the r134a that is in the system then don’t worry about removing it
Remove compressor drive belt I guess, removes main mechanical burden ...if you want to remove compressor itself, or even condensor, to save the weight of car carrying that now redundant component around, you can do that too..bear in mind before loosening off any hoses or steel gas lines of the system that it will contain a/c coolant gas still under some pressure. Compressor is the main weight and mechanical burden on engine, although when system is switched off the compressor pulley load drive effort is low, anyway.
if car has one "serpentine" belt driving everything, rather than a separate AC drive belt, then, it is possible that removing the compressor will necessitate fitting a new shorter engine belt compatible with no AC.Depends of car's belt arrangement.
Chances are on a small car like that, with more modern lighter components, the a/c compressor, condensor and hoses may not amount to much more than 10kgs..if it is, it would be highly unlikely to exceed 20kgs..
I don't know what the legalities of opening the system and loosing the gas off yourself is (and if it was my car, it probably would not factor in much with me,as opposed old R12 gas , R134 gas is not a CFC anyway so far as I know) , but, from a safety pov, wear good eye protection on the off-chance that suddenly escaping refrigerant could fluke a squirt-hit on your eyes.
