You did not mention a specific model number; my D1481 has no such icon -- but my D1680 does, so I'll answer ref. the D1680 model cordless phones....
That icon is a Status Report for the answering machine. It says the answerer is ON (or off) and a digit shows how many messages are stored ( on mine, 1 old message is still there and not yet deleted ). Note a "cassette tape" symbol on the bottom row of keys accesses the answering machine from the handset.
Other models, check your manual. The model number is on a small sticker under the battery in the handset -- enter this number at www.manualslib.com to get a free copy of the User's Manual.
