How do I install a recoil spring ?
How do I install a recoil starter spring on a 6.5 hp self-propelled briggs stratton lawn mower? (Craftsman model no. 917.379470)
I have removed the housing and am looking for a hole or a notch on the inside to insert one end of the starter spring. I have already found the notch inside the winder for the the other end of the spring.
The only thing that resembles what I'm looking for is the hole in the housing for the starter cord.

Sometimes the hook at the end of the starter spring has broken off from rust or has straightened itself out. What I do if I don't have time to get a new spring is make myself a hook and attach it to the notch. Then you have to manually wind the spring in the right direction and hope that the spring doesn't unravel on you. Wear safety goggles for that!
If I need to get it started without the recoil spring, I just wrap the starting rope around the engine and start it that way until I have time to get a new part.
