How do I tell if water pump is working on 2001 Izuzu 2.2L engine. Overheats and seems to have blown head gasket ( no water in oil ) , just blew bottom out of new radiator?
If the impeller has fallen of or broken off, you will not move coolant in the rad. One way to see if the water pump is moving coolant is to run the engine with the rad cap off. NOW,,, if you have a busted head gasket you (can/ will) get excessive pressure in the rad. due to combustion gases and pressure escaping the head into the coolant system, that can cause enough pressure to "blow out the radiator. Also, if the head gasket is blown, running the engine with the rad. cap off will cause a splash or pumping out of the coolant. The 2.2 is prone to blowing the head gasket before any overheating problems occur. If you go in to replace the head gasket, you should replace the water pump as a precaution anyway, along with the coolant thermostat. Hope this helps.
The New Rad. Your looking at is for the 3.2 v6 that also comes in that year model. It will be a bit small for the 5.3 chevy. It will stay in the normal zone as long as the car is moving, but if you stop it will heat up, and NO cooling at all with A/C on. If you are going to sell the car, OK to the stuff in the rad. to fix the head gasket. BUT if your are thinking about keeping it at all. What ever plugs up a blown head gasket will also plug up a new rad. Now as for this site, I would have to say it is the best site of it's type. Most of the Tech's here will do there best to help and give follow up answers with out hesitation. As with anything there are exceptions. Now back to your Rodeo, If the body is in good shape inside and out. I would do the engine right, The 4 cyl. will be way better on gas in the coming summer. That Engine you have will be better stuffed into an older Camero, Monte Carlo, or an older S10 Blazer with a 2 inch drop. Now that sounds like fun. .The New Rad.
