How do you remove the flywheel on an old Briggs mower engine with no flywheel nut? Are they just press-fit on? It's the kind with the honeycomb type mesh over the top of the flywheel. Thanks
Hi, the flywheel is on a tapered shaft with a alloy key. If you hold the motor by the flywheel while suspending it by hand and have someone strike the top off the shaft using a brass drift and hammer it will dislodge from the motor. This is assuming you have un done the sprag clutch assembly from the top of the flywheel. Hope this helps, regards Phil.
Hi, there is a special tool available but basically you need to lock the engine up. Do this by feeding a a piece of rope down the sparkplug hole as a piston stop or holding the bottom of the crankshaft in a vise with a rag if you have the engine removed. Then grab the sprag clutch with a strap wrench or a pipe wrench and undo it while been careful not to break the small screw lugs off the clutch. Thanks again, Phil. You the Man! I've been refurbishing old mowers (and weed whackers and anything power equipment) that I get for free from anywhere I can and flipping them. Kind of addicted to it now. But every now and then I hit a snag and look to guys like you who truly humble me. I've been "giving it back" by sharing what I've learned on this site as well. Gotta love the "FixYa.com".Thanks again, Phil. You the Man!
