If you take the lower cover off, you will see the valve. First off, Shut off the gas!
You have to the right of the valve, the input gas. On the bottom you have 3 connections. The left is the connection to the thermocouple. That is a safety feature that detects the flame, and shuts off the gas if there is no flame.
then next on out the bottom in the middle is the gas outlet to the burner. and the last one is a line tot he pilot light.
Then in the back of the unit is teh safety thermostat bulbs. The come straight out the back of the unit into the heater.
You have to take off the gas line, MAKE SURE THE GAS IS OFF. Then take off the thermocouple, gas outlet, and pilot lines.
Now the unit is threaded into the heater on the back. The thermostat bulbs go right through a threaded flange. You should be able to untwist this anti-clockwise. Do it carefully.
That is how to remove it. Please take caution replacing all lines. Use plumbers tape rated for gas lines and check all connections with soapy water. With the gas on, put soapy water on all the connection joints. If you get bubbles, you have a leak.Turn the gas off right away, and re secure the connections.
NOTE**** I do not know the need for removing the valve but, if the problem you are having is with keeping the pilot light lit, try replacing the thermocouple first. Its 9 out of 10 times the problem.
PLEASE use caution when working with gas and if at any time you feel you are not able to work on it safely and or are not sure what you are doing contact a professional plumber or heating technician.
