What I did on mine: take it off its bracket, flip it over bottoms up. You will see a part of the "rim" curving slightly out, that's the battery cover lid.
It is a very tight fit; to make things relatively easy, rotate the unit with the bottom still facing up until the curved part is on the right of the unit. Make sure there is no (red, if I remember correctly) peg locking the compartment closed, then insert your right thumb in there, and pull out. The battery compartment will eventually slide out part of the way. Remove the battery by pushing them out from below the battery compartment; they are on two separate blades that can be used to push them out.
