It is either the gas valve or the piece that the pilot light heats up. After the pilot light gets so hot it heats the copper tube looking thing up and then that goes to a little box that kicks a little switch and lets the power through to the gas valve which then opens and ignites the burner. You can check for continuity on the 2 poles on the switch when it gets hot.
