What you need to do first is remove the starter housing. The inside disk needs to be wound in the counterclockwise position about 3-4 revolutions. I use a vise grip to hold it in place. Heat the end of the rope with a match or lighter, it might catch fire, put it out if it does. While it is still hot, pinch the end with your fingers to make a a point with the rope. While still holding the disk in place, align it so the rope will go through the hole and into the disk. Tie a knot there. carefully release the disk until it winds back to the handle. Re-install the housing. If the rope is not fully tight, then you can slide it around the disk to add one extra turn.
