It is very uncommon for a had drive to fail with out power surges or some other physical damage so I would suggest making sure all of the cables are connected properly and that the connectors on the back of the hard drive that tell it whether it is slave, cable select, or master are setup correctly, and if the hard drive has failed there really is no way to get information off of it, but my hopes are high that it has not failed.
