How to recover data from lacie etherdisk when it does not keep a network conntection
I lose the network connection to my LaCie 4 GB storage device on a regular basis. If I power cycle the device the connection is restablished. Is this a known problem or should I be concerned that my LaCie is about to die. How can I attach a hard drive to the unit or update the nic drivers or install another nic on the device?
Or, is this a sign that the device is going to die?

As to the person trying to access one of the Hard Drives in a LaCie ethernet disk. You will NOT be able to retrieve data from any ONE HD due to the nature of how the ethernet disk is formatted. From the factory they use a raid config that spans the 4 drives to appear as ONE drive. Thus if you remove any one of the 4 drives you will not be able to see ANY data in the other system you are using to look at it. Sorry that's the only problem with losing any one drive when the 4 are raid configured to appear as ONE drive. In other words when even ONE of the 4 drives crashes your data from ALL 4 is inaccessable.....bummer huh?
I'll have to look into it a little more but off the top of my head I would say that the nic may be going bad or some other component of the etherdisk. You can try opening it up and putting the hard drive into an enclosure and connecting it to a pc via usb to get the data, you can also then share the usb drive and use it over the network, however removing the hard drive may void any warranty you may have. If the hard drive is in fact bad then you should be able to replace it and then continue to use the device. I'll get back to you when I get more info about the device.
Sorry about the long delay in responses, I got stuck on the road for a while. Anyway, I think I would suggest trying to return the Lacie if at all possible, just to try and replace it with a better device such as the buffalo you mentioned, they make good memory so I would imagine most of their products are worth owning, I generally stick to seagate and westerndigital hard drives and so own a few MyBooks personally. I've had them for about 2 years now and no problems yet, I had a netgear with a NIC but *** had a raid controller that failed after about 6 months so I can only get style="display:none;">Sorry about the long delay in responses, I got stuck on the road for a while.
