The CMOS battery is located underneath the keyboard of your Dell i5100.
If you're up to it, then try these simple steps:
- Open the lid to a 180 degree angle and using a very small Flat Screwdriver, pry the hinge cover on the right side. There's a small notch where you can pry it out.
- Check if the keyboard is being held by 2 screws. To loosen them, remove the battery and unscrew them from inside the battery bay.
- Carefully lift the keyboard in an angled position and check the ribbon or contact tape that connects the keyboard to the motherboard. Flip the keyboard towards you and see if you can reach the CMOS battery (usually covered by a blue plastic shield or protective cover. There's a pair of wire coming from it and the end is a small connector. You may remove the connector attached to the motherboard carefully to get the CMOS battery.
Utterly WRONG! The one correct part is prying the hinge cover off. Then everything is wrong from there out. The keyboard is not retained by two screws accessed in the battery compartment, but from four screws on the top of the computer under the hinge cover. When you lift the keyboard you will find that the CMOS battery is not under there at all. DO NOT start yanking on the graphics card. That will not help. This site has so much bogus info that you cannot find the correct info even with extensive search. Fixya, fix yourself or you're history.
You know, this site is just infested with answers that are so totally wrong that it couldn't be an accident. On the Dell Inspiron 5100 the keyboard is held on by four screws, accessed from the top, NOT the battery bay on the reverse side. There is no CMOS battery under the keyboard. And this "solution" looking for a problem is so completely wrong and so are almost every "solution" on Fixya. This is therefore rendered a useless site.
You have to completely dissasemble the laptop, the battery is on the underside of the motherboard and it is soldered into the board. The battery is spot welded to 2 posts, so you need to unsolder the old battery at the posts and solder a new one in that comes with the posts atattched. Available on eBay for around 5 bucks, expect to spend acouple hours repair time on this. NOTE: when dissasembling it is not nessesary to remove the cooling fan/heat sink/cpu assembly, just loosen the 4 screws. If the battery has less than 2.6 volts it should be replaced.
