How to replace starter rope on a McCullough MS40 chain saw

I installed a new rope and wound it up on the spool tied a not so it wont come off. Then put it back on and puled the rope it pulled out and then retracted the next pull it never retracted. IT is on there snug and I looked at the spring and it is fine . Now what.
