Set the tension dial to the midway point between high & low number. (This is the factory standard. )
Then test on pieces of scrap fabric from your project. The tension is correct when both upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If the upper thread shows under the fabric, it is too loose. If the bobbin thread shows on the top of the fabric, the tension is too tight. You'll probably need to tweak the tension to get it where it should be. Tension is not static and depends greatly on the needle/thread/fabric you are using. User should get comfortable with adjusting it every time a new project is begun.
