How to troubleshoot a Magichef md# MCD1611ST microwave that is not heating anything at all
This microwave will not heat anything at all.... It does though do the following; Control panel will light up, power level, minutes to cook and all other functions on panel operate normally. Cabinet lamp lights up and turntable turns when operating. Unit will cycle through minutes programmed and turns off at end of cook time. Basically it is just not heating anything placed in it and there is no hum coming from the magnatron when running. The following has been tested and appears to be ok; Main fuse at power cord input to unit has continuity. Thermostat switch (mounted on top of magnatron) has continuity. Relay on pcb of front panel is providing 120vac to primary of high voltsge transformer. High voltage transformer primary winding has 1.0 ohm and no continuity between the case ground and either pin of the primary coil input pins. High voltage transformer secondary winding has 110 ohms and no continuity between case ground and and either pin of the secondary coil input pins. High voltage transformer filament winding has 0 (zero) ohms and DOES HAVE continuity between case ground and the pin of the filament coil input AS IT SHOULD. High voltage capacitor (previously discharged) when tested using the 40megohm range setting on a multimeter, starts off at a about 3 megohm and builds to 10.3 megohm. When discharged and probes reversed, same result as above occurs, indicating capacitor is neither open or shorted. There is no contunuity between either terminal of the capacitor and the can of the component either. High voltage diode when placed in series with a 9vdc battery and a multimeter, indicates 6.3vdc. When diode is reversed, meter reads 0.2millivolts, indicating diode junction is neither open or shorted. Magnatron filment pins when checked with multimeter indicate 0.1 ohms and there is no continuity between either filament pins and the case of the magnatron. Magntron when removed from unit and inspected shows no signs of burnt areas, no creacks on magnets or tip of unit and magnatron and cooling fins are clean and free of any dirt. Have already replaced both the original hv diode and capacitor with no change with problem. I'm thinking that the magnatron may be the problem with not generating any microwaves, even though the filament is not shorted or open. Any feedback/solutions would be welcomed before buying a replacement magnatron. Thanks! Denny
