I am able to move the gear shift, but the vehicle stays stuck in reverse. When I put the gear shift in R, Drive or any other gear the car does not move or even sound like its ingaging anything

Maybe the shifter cable. I would look under the car on the drivers side of the transmission, with the wheels blocked, have someone operator the gear shifter and see if it is moving the shift lever on the transmission.
I experienced almost the same problem last month. According to PowerFord in Torrance, the transmission shift cable was broken (basically wore out somehow) and had to be replaced. According to my invoice, the actual cable was $81.02 and labor was $395.99.
I have a 2004 Aviator with 56K miles and had the transmission shift cable break the day before Thanksgiving. The parts and labor cost was $306.00.I have a 2004 Aviator with 56K miles and had the transmission shift cable break the day before Thanksgiving. The parts and labor cost was $306.00.
