Unfortunately it's probably the volume control circuit in the radio. The most cost effective means to repair it is to replace the radio. You might be able to get a good used one that will fit exactly from an auto salvage yard and save yourself a small fortune on the repair cost.
Hi! I used to have that problem too. Just found out that the stereo mainboard is dusty so I cleaned it with compressed air and it worked just fine. Hope this helps and have a good one!
I believe that the stereo has reached its breakpoint. A stereo replacement will be a good idea now.I believe that the stereo has reached its breakpoint. A stereo replacement will be a good idea now.

The radio has a setting for vehicle speed
disable this feature and see if the concern returns
did you verify in your owners manual the settings for vehicle speed adjustment?
I have some bad news for you
I confirmed with my friend at Land Rover that almost ALL their vehicles have vehicle speed sensing radios
however, since 2005 was the last year for the freelander he would like your vin to confirm our theory
furthermore, I went through all my wiring schematics for the 05 freelander and found every radio, even the base unit had a VSS input!
we are talking about the "stock" Land Rover radio correct?
