Kind of a hard question but usually the only thing goes wrong is fuel and fire. pull the spark plug out and plug it in to the coil wire hold the plug bottom to the metal in the engine. turn the engine over. if it has spark that's good, if it don't it might have a bad plug or coil. next take off the air cleaner and spray just a squirt of carburetor cleaner in the opening of the carburetor. try to start it. if it starts it needs the carburetor cleaned or rebuilt. either way if you are getting it at a good price it sounds like you can fix it for around $10.00 to $20.00 id go for it. good luck.
well Donna, on riding mowers there is usually a sticker under the seat that has the year or on the engine the are numbers stamped on a metal tag or on the side of the engine. any mower parts store can give you the year it was made. As far as Briggs and Stratton engines. I have had great luck with them. they seem to be indestructible. But that is only my opinion. There are some bad ones. I hope this helps you good luck.
