I am planning to buy Land Rover LR2 (Model 2008) in Dubai. I test drove the same and everything seems to be fine and only 52,000 kms are done but i feel that AC was not cooling in 2-3 minutes although the weather is now cool in Dubai. I asked the owner of the car and he mentioned that this is the technical problem in all LR2 and will be cooling once you drive few kilometers. Is this true or i should go and get it checked with the agency Please advise urgently
Hi, the air con should be cooling air almost immediatel upon being turned on. It will produce colder air at lower blower speeds, due to less airflow over the cooling matrix / heat exchanger.
Quick check, have the engine at operating temp, open the bonnet / hood, drape a blanket or similar over the front end. Make sure it cannot get pulled / dropped into the engine. Start the vehicle, close all doors and windows, (your at the controls) turn the A'C on, and run it on low for a minute, then gradually increase blower speed. Within a few minutes it should be cranking out COLD air, not cool air. The blanket draping the front reduces the air flow, and makes the A/C fans kick in quickly.
All late model vehicles fitted with A/C start cooling almost immediately, and unless parked in the sun all day, reduce interior temps very quickly. Why would one buy a vehicle with A/C that only became useful when driving? Yes, the airflow through the A/C heat exchanger / condenser will increase / decrease when driving, but that's why modern vehicle engines have a relatively high idle, to ensure that the A/C doesn't 'bog' the engine down and the A/C system will function as designed,
Do not let the vehicle run for an excessive length of time with the front end shrouded.
I would recommend, that if you really wished to purchase the vehicle, have a proficient A/C shop check it out, or take it to a dealership and have them check it.
No the only thing wrong with this vehicle is the R134 gas is low thats all ,after about 2/3 years from new they need re-gassing then as vehicle get older you have to top it up with gas more often ,.this vehicle holds about 700/800 grms of gas and i reckon its down to about 200 grms of gas so air con is still coming on but its taking a while to cool ,not a problem at all just get it regassed or buy a can of gas if available in your country and connect it to low pressure side of AC its the smaller valve ,then start engine and put AC on and let it **** in the gas from the refill can but do not overfill it will not be any colder but it will keep clicking in and slowing the engine and then clickinig out again .If you fill with one can a year if that and only put 500 grms a time in in the spring no problem .R134 gas is more corrosive that the old R12 so its tends to leak through the seals ,happens to all cars ,this is not a problem if you like it buy it but i hope its a diesel model with manual gearbox as this is worth more money for when you decide to sell it
