I bought a Royal KMM typewriter today (1940s) and it was working fine. I was looking at how to remove the ribbon and now the keys appear to be locked - they won't go up further than halfway. Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Look inside to see if any of the metal keys is not level with the others. Sometimes two key rods will go up at the same time and lock together. Otherwise, there is a sort of "stem" that holds the the bottoms of the metal keys in position. You might try cleaning out any debris and putting on a small amount of sewing machine oil.
