I bought and fitted a new battery last year. For a while it started without a problem, but now the battery is dead. Even when I kick start it and run it for a while there is no charge in the battery

Either your battery is low on acid and may need top up and charge or else your battery is damaged as a reason.The other problem you may have is your battery is not charging and this may be caused by loose or rusted connections or bad ground.Get a meter an read for a dc volt reading just at the point of connection while engine is running.If not then check your rectifier or it may need replacing.This should solve your problem.
