I bouhgt a kit to hook up my internal sata hard drive to my laptop usb port.. i hook all up and including the power supply to the drive...when i go to my computer it does not show up.. i then go to my computer> control panel> admin tools>computer management> disk mangement> and see nothing there.. tried another laptop and different hard drive.. tried the usb kit on one laptop with windows xp srvc pk 3 and also on laptop with windows 7 any help thanks

Make sure the drive jumper is set to MASTER and try again, is the drive spinning up? Turn on the power supply and let drive spin up then plug into laptop via the USB cable.
Sorry my mistake, I don't think SATA has jumpers! But try powering on before plugging in USB.
If you see it in device manager you should also be able to see in disc management, it may need formatting or just assigning a drive letter.
Sometimes these kind of kits have problems at the controler state and are unable to recognize the drive. Have you tried to change it to a new one at the shop that you bought it?

You have done an excellent job of narrowing down the problem.
It is clear that either the drive has failed or you have a defective USB adapter kit.
My guess is that it is the hard drive. Maxtor, in my experience, is the most unreliable HD manufacturer...ever! Especially if you don't hear the sound of the disk spinning up or the arm clicking across the disk.
However, you should keep with your troubleshooting process. All you have to do now is try the kit with a different hard drive or a different kit.
Then you will know if it is the hard drive or the kit.

If you can see it in disk management you are home free.
Look up "assign drive letter" in Windows Help.
Once you assign it a drive letter you will be able to access it in Windows.

Okay, let's review what you have done since isolating it to the kit or the drive...
You are using an Administrator-level account when connecting the drive, right?
You have tried two different disk drives, right?
You have tried two different USB kits, right?
You have tried both disk drives with each kit, right?
You have tried each combination on a different computer, right?
If you have answered NO to any of this queries then do some more troubleshooting until you can say YES to all of them.
I am very certian that you are close to finding the cause of the problem.

there are two things involved, its either you need to set the hard disk jumper, or the kit you bought is not good. Also, are you sure the hard disk is still working?
To set the jumper, check the back of the hard disk, beside where the IDE cable or where the hard drive power socket is, you will see a black rubber/plastic, remove the rubber/plastic and fix it to the next pin, then test the hard drive again. If that doesn't work, fix it to the other pin, and so on.
If after setting the jumper and the problem still persists, Then you need to return the kit from where you bought it and take another.
You can as well test the kit with another Hard disk, to be sure your hard disk is not the one that is faulty.

yes that's true, but in a situation like this, you have to try everything in order to know precisely where the fault is coming from.

Okay, connect the hard drive to your PC and leave it for a while, as the system might recognize it later. Since its a new one, it might need time to load.
Also, consider the fact that your hard drives are 200 gig and 750 gig respectively. These hard drives are large in size, so you need to use it on a PC with a standard configuration, that is, a PC that has a large memory size, dual processor, and large hard disk size.
All these has to equal with your external hard drive. If the external hard drive is very much larger, it might take time for the PC to load the external drive.
