I can get on Facebook & navigate around ok,BUT...I cannot accept any requests or publish my status. When I hit "publish" in Mafia Wars, for instance it just sits there & does nothing. The same thing happens on the request page when I hit "accept"...nothing! In Fairy Land my garden loads, but no plants show up in my own garden or any others. Anything I write does not get published. This has been going on now for approx. 36 hours. I use Firefox 3.0 & have a dial up connection. Please help! This is sooo frustrating!
There are two groups of problems that can cause this. I'm going to go through them in order of ease to fix and you will get most joy from following the suggestions in the order given.
Browser Checks: 1. Before we go down the road of trying to fix more complex issues you will need to check that this is not browser specific or that Javascript is blocked. The exact method of checking depends on the browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox Opera etc) but is usually found in Options/Settings. Javascript should be set to enabled.
2. If you can not find the setting or the setting is correct you might like to try a second web browser. Chrome has a very efficient Javascript engine and is free from Google. FireFox is also much loved and is also free. If the problem is not specific to your browser then this sounds like a connectivity issue. Sometimes even Broadband users can find that the quality of the connection is such that not enough target="_blank">AdAware and SpyBot S&D can help clear out this stuff. Both are free or have a free version and both come highly recommended. It is often worth running this stuff from time to time anyway just to keep the PC clean. 3. If it does not prove to be your PC then we have to look at your line and your ISP. It is conceivable that the ISP is running heavy (this means that lots of users are on) or has a hardware issue. For example Virgin recently started sometimes reporting Facebook as not found to it's UK users - this was caused by a broken router and was fixed after a few days. Try checking the ISPs home page for any known faults or phoning them if you can not find any reports. The odds are that even if your ISP denies having a problem (some do that) that they will suddenly fix the problem they do not have. 4.ISP usage policy. Some ISPs will choke your connection if you are using more than you "fair share" this is often an unknown usage rate. When users go beyond the average usage or are connected longer than most others the ISP can and will often do things to stop or slow data packets from your PC. BitTorrent users find this to be the case often. In such situations it is best to simply leave the connection a lone for a few days. Mostly a phone call to the ISP will quickly identify if this is the case and they should have a policy for what you can do about it. Please note not all ISPs are even. Some are more honest or helpful than others.
