I can move the chain freely by hand but when I hit
On a Genie garage door opener model GCG350 I can move the chain freely by hand but when I hit the button the chain just barelty moves and a lot of clocking comes from the control module.

Sounds like you are in need of replacement gears. It is like the transmission going out in your car. I would leave this to a pro but if you want to do it parts can be found at genie.com or overheaddoor.com. Thanks BB
