I'm assuming that the unit is in perfect functioning order. In that case you can do 3 things:
1 - shut down the pc, remove the dvd unit, reboot, run a registry cleaner (Eusing is very good and free), shut down the pc and reconnect the unit, reboot and it should work . If it doesn't then... 2 - the driver was corrupted. Since it's a very basic one you should be concerned that there's something nasty lurking in your pc. The absolute first thing you should do is to run the System File Checker. To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow
This will reinstall all corrupted files with the ones on your install disk. You will have to fully update Win again after it. The problem with this procedure is that whatever has causd the corruption is still there, and it might come back to bite you. So , my recommendation is ... 2 - recover all your files and folders and do a clean (with full format) reinstall.I'm assuming that the unit is in perfect functioning order. Hi, Could you please give more details on the same. Are you getting an error message when you try update the driver. Also from which website are you trying to update the driver. For what reason are you trying to update the driver
Hi, Thanks for the update on the same. The one way to go around the solution is to create a new user account in windows.
Restart the computer and before windows starts to load press F8 a couple of times to select safe mode
Login using the adminstrator account Click on yes to continue working in safe mode. 1.Click on start >settings>control panel or click on start>control panel 2. Click on user accounts and create a new account Select computer admin status for the account
Restart your computer and login using the new account you have created . Check if the drive works now .

Start : control panel : performance and maintenance : administrative tools : computer management : device manager Click the + that opens up DVD/CD-ROM drives Double click on the one you are having problems with and insert your installation disc then update driver. If you haven't got the disc then search online for update driver and then the name of the one in question. There will be a few websites where you will be able to download the updates without an installation disc.

This is because optical drives have just a generic driver that comes with Windows - there isn't a newer one to upgrade to.
