I cannot access any programs or the internet. I keep getting virus or infected messages and am being asked to buy a virus protecting software. I believe that I have been invaded. How to recover my computer without having to take it and paying a bundle to restore the thing?

The one asking you to buy the software itself is a Malware. I suggest you to Install Malware Bytes (Freeware) easily availble in the net and run it.
That should take care of it.
