With the assumption that this is a DVD recorder not just a player, and all connections are correct, two things need to be in place. 1. Source: the unit needs to have a cable tuner so you can receive a channel to record or an external input (look like stereo plugs) for video in and audio in so you can use a cable box for tuning a channel 2: Format: these units will need a DVD -R or DVD +R format blank to use. Some units can use both.
If this unit is a combo (DVDR and VCR in one box) then the source should be available to both for recording and selecting the appropriate channel should work.
