I don't know what's happening - the pump & filter seem to be set up properly but when I take the lid off the filter to dump the basket, water comes gushing out of it and doesn't stop. The filter is currently on 'backwash" and if I try to change it, it starts gushing water (on all settings except "backwash") ? It's like the pool water is not being stopped somewhere...I just don't know what to do?? When I turn the pump on it appears that it's pushing dirty water BACK into the pool, but like I said, it LOOKS like everything is set up properly?? HELP!

It definitely sounds like your pool filters not set up correctly. Here is a copy of the users manual. Try taking a look at the detailed drawing. It sounds like your valve might not be set up correctly so pay special attention to that area of your filter.
