I have the same problem. If you don't mind, pigsticker1, would you explain to me, how I can open the machine so that I can see if there are some loose connections like you said or if the thermal fuse is broken (the troubleshooting on the manual suggests this). I've tried twisting the bottom but it required a lot of force and I also tried to open it with a flat screwdriver with lever-like action. I couldn't continue on both methods fearing damaging some parts.
Is there any specific way to open it?

Check wire connections inside of grinder, where it attaches to the motor, and switch for loose or bad connection.
