The VCR doesn't have a digital tuner. It has an analogue tuner. So it won't pick up the digital TV transmissions. You need a Freeview box connected to the house aerial system, and then connected to the VCR by a SCART lead. Put the VCR on one of the AV channels so it "sees" the signal from the Freeview box as a predicament for its own tuner.
Some older TVs had a video out function. This no longer applies to new TVs.
