I have a 17.5 Murray riding lawn mower engine runs well when I engage the blades it spits and sputters and starts backfiring what could be the problem

Sounds like bad fuel....runs fine when not under stress but poops out under pressure. Drain fuel and refill with new mix if it's a 50/50 gas-oil blend.
