I have a 1984 r100rt with only 24000 km on clock bike was not used for about 5 years - when I start the bike a thick black smoke is generated-with oil smell-is it the valve seals?

No,, its just oil thats run down the valve seals and the pistons are letting a little oil past just run the bike up till it clears its self out,, its been standing around a long time,, it will clear with a good run up,,,
thats why there called "the flying brick" 24000km is just run in for one of them! servic it well and it will go round the clock twice,, show me a bike that can do that? and dont say "honda!!!! ha ha ha! joke!
