I have a 1988 Mercury Cougar 2 door 5.0 when you run the headlights or turn the air conditioning on or heat on the fuel gauge goes way over the F line and doesn't register right and the temperature gauge goes way over the hotline and and stays there and it runs kind of sluggish the more you run it like it's might be getting hot and there's a clicking in the bottom of the motor when it's cooling down
Try to get codes read but this is an electrical problem the alternator has bad diodes in it or the voltage regulator is bad the increased load from lights heater fan is causing an open circuit clean all electrical connections and see what happens but I think it's a bad diodes or burn light switch or both have your alternator tested
