I have a 1990 2.2 subaru legacy it is either burning oil or losing it somewhere but no puddles head gaskets seem to be fine doesn't overheat and no water in the oil blows smoke on startup

If the smoke is blue yes you are burning oil. Could be piston rings
I would check for a defective PCV valve. If it has not been changed, I have seen cases where they suck the oil right out of the engine. Depending on the mileage, I wouldn't be concerned over a small puff of smoke when starting the engine. Thanks.

I just came across this old post. Glad I could help and, yes, the sending units will tend to leak. Sometimes it's a hairline crevice or just worn out.
