I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy 2.5 . The check engine light came on, I drove about 30 mi. went up a small grade and it sputtered a little. I got to a flat area for about 2 mi. and the engine shut down. I had the codes read..Fault codes were Knock Sensor & Miss Fire #1. Inadvertently the codes were erased.I pulled all plugs they were black and gapped at 60. Replaced all plugs and gapped at 44. need advice on what else I need to do. also will the knock sensor keep it from starting

Make sure that all your spark plugs are gapped to the manufacturer to your car. Yes you should change the Knock sensor if it shows a code for that. The codes you get from any new car usually tells you what part needs to be replaced. check all your fluids to make sure they are all full. check your oil dip stick when your car is off with a rag, when you check your tramsmission that you need to have the car running for about a couple of minutes so the tramsmission fluids gets hot enough to get a good reading because it expands when trams. fluids get hot. If the trams. fluids are little low to shut off car engine and put just a little transmission fluid but do not over fill it because it will destroy tramsmission. when you changed these parts that you should drive the car if this is possible for a couples of miles and then take it to advance auto parts and let them to test the codes again to see if these codes come back again.
The engine should start if knock sensor is faulty.but there will be starting problems noticed if knock sensor is faulty.The knock sensor is a listening device located inside the engine near the intake manifold or the pistons that is designed to detect pressure inside the engine. The vibrations that it records as a result of this pressure are converted into voltage and sent to the car's engine control unit (ECU). This is to prevent detonation in the engine when the fuel/air mixture explodes too quickly and causes engine knock or "pinging."
